Brownea sp.
Handkerchief Tree or Cruz Caspi
Native to the rainforests of South America, it gets it's common name of handkerchief tree from it's drooping leaves, a phenomenon known as "pouring out foliage". The bark from this tree is an ingredient in a contraceptive tea. This tea is said to protect women from pregnancy for up to 3 months and if it's too strong it could cause sterility. If you cut open the trunk of the tree you will see how it got it's name Cruz Caspi. Cruz is spanish for cross and caspi means stick in Kichwa, an indigenous language. The tree trunk boast the shape of a cross inside.
